"I don't know who done this, but he was a nice boy,” said Nicole Paulk, Victim’s Sister. “He was my brother. He was my pride and joy,"
The Paulk Family is grieving the loss of 18-year-old Traveon Paulk. Free gun locks to be distributed
Suffolk, Va (3-30-16) The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office will distribute free gun locks Friday to shoppers outside Farm Fresh in North Suffolk.
Deputies will set up outside the grocery store, at 3675 Bridge Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., said Suffolk Sheriff’s Maj. E.C. Harris. The gun lock distribution is part of Project ChildSafe, a national campaign that promotes firearm safety and storage through law enforcement organizations.
At the same time, the Sheriff’s Office will collect nonperishable foods to donate to Bethlehem Christian Church’s food pantry, Harris said.
“There is a huge need for food out there today,” he said.
The gun locks will fit any firearm, he said.
The department will also be giving away activity books that teach children about gun safety, Harris said. He urged parents to sit down with their children and use the materials to teach them about firearm safety.
“Children are so curious … and there are no do-overs if they get their hands on a gun and something goes wrong,” said Harris.
It’s important for adults to keep firearms unloaded and locked up out of children’s reach, Harris said.
Also, gun owners should store weapons and ammunition in separate locations in the house, further avoiding the possibility of an accidental shooting, he added.

Updated: Police investigate accidental shooting
Lewisville, Tx (3-30-16) Captain Dan Rochelle said that police believe the victim was shot in the face accidentally with a rifle at a home in the 1600 block of Glenhill. For some reason someone at the location decided to drive the victim to the hospital instead of calling for an ambulance. They made it as far as the intersection of Garden Ridge and Main Street.
Miranda Vasey was driving by when the car stopped, and she saw the victim getting out of the car bloody. "I stopped and got out to check on him, thinking they had been in a vehicle accident," she said.
Vasey told police that the driver did not have a phone. Another man who stopped at the scene called 9-1-1. "I assisted in having the man sit down, getting the driver of the mustang to find something cloth to apply pressure to the gun shot," said Vasey. She said she talked to the man to keep him alert until paramedics arrived.
Rochelle said that he was talking to police at the hospital, and that as far as he knew everyone was cooperating in the investigation.
The victim was taken by helicopter to a hospital. The helicopter was headed in the direction of Parkland when it flew over the LTJ offices. Captain Dan Rochelle said that the victim was talking to paramedics.
Lewisville Police Chief Russell Kerbow provided an update by social media: "We have reason to believe this was an accidental shooting. We have no information at this point to indicate any danger to nearby residents or schools."

Indiana man held in his wife’s fatal weekend shooting
FRANKFORT, In (3-29-16) — A central Indiana man who’s a former deputy town marshal faces a preliminary murder charge in his wife’s fatal shooting.
Keith A. Smith, 56, was arrested Saturday after the body of Lisa Smith, 50, was found in Frankfort, about 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis. He’s being held without bond at the Clinton County Jail.
On Monday, a judge ordered Smith to be held on a preliminary murder charge and gave prosecutors 72 hours to file formal charges.
During the hearing, Smith could be heard sobbing, and as he left the courtroom, he said, “Tell everyone I’m sorry.”
According to court documents, Smith told investigators that he and his wife had argued before he got his gun to demonstrate how they could have a “suicide pact,” the (Evansville) Journal & Courier reported. He said he pulled the trigger to shoot himself, but he accidentally shot her instead.
Smith “sat on the edge of the bed and smoked a cigarette” after the incident, the documents state.
The documents suggest that Smith “had no concept of times” while recalling the events of the day. He also was unable to remember how the argument started, the documents said.
Smith once served as a deputy marshal in the town of Colfax, WLFI-TV reported. Clinton County Sheriff’s Maj. Joe Mink said Smith was terminated for rule violations after working for the sheriff’s office for less than a year.
The case will still be heavily investigated, according to Chief Deputy Prosecutor John Myers.
Smith is expected to appear in court again this week after the former charges are filed.

Turkey hunter shot in face by hunting partner
Carroll County, Ms(3-28-16) A hunting trip that went dangerously wrong ended with a hunter being shot in the face and hospitalized.
According to Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' Lt. Chris Reed, Curtis L. Entrekin, 63, of Madison and and Charles G. Childs, 69, of Brandon were turkey hunting in Carroll County Friday morning. Reed said the two were together but had separated at some point during the morning. Childs was returning to the area where the two parted when he was shot.
"The victim was walking along a logging road up a hill when the shooter saw what he thought was a turkey," Reed said. When Entrekin realized what he had done, Reed said the man rendered aid and called for help.
"He was airlifted to UMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center)," Reed said. "They removed 26 pellets from his face and neck area. He may have some damage to his left eye."
Although the incident appears to be accidental, Reed said MDWFP officers are still working on the case. "It's very early in the investigation," Reed said. "We're still looking into it." Part of that investigation includes taking and testing a blood sample of the shooter for narcotics and alcohol, Reed said.
Reed said it appears to be a case of a hunter mistaking another for game. In a similar incident in December, a hunter shot and killed his son in the Delta National Forest after mistaking him for a wild hog. Reed said shootings such as these clearly point out the need for hunters to positively identify what they are shooting at beyond a shadow of a doubt before they pull a trigger. "We cannot stress this enough," Reed said. "A split-second mistake can have lifelong consequences."
Reed said the victim was released from UMMC on Saturday.

Mother charged with shooting 17-year-old son; claims it was accidental
Memphis, Tn (2-28-26) A mother admitted to shooting her 17-year-old son Monday morning, but she said it was an accident.
The teen went to St. Francis Hospital, but was later taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. The incident happened at Golden Park and Sandy Park.
The mother, Sherry Gray, called police earlier when her son ran away from home. He ended up returning home the same night. The mother told police she made her son get into her car and take her to the house of the son’s girlfriend, where he ran to after running away from home.
She then told police while they were in the car, her son got upset and started hitting her. The teen tried to get out of the car when his mother pulled out a handgun, pointed it at him, and shot him.
She told police she wanted to scare him but she did not intend to pull the trigger and shoot him.
Mark Stamps, who lives nearby, heard the incident unfolding and came out to see what was going on.
"His shoulder...I guess his shoulder was hurting and he was crying," Stamps said. "She was like, 'Get in the car.' To me, she should get charged for that, because you don't scare a child with a gun. You don't point a gun at a child at all, really. Like, that's a charge right there. You shouldn't do that."
After the shooting, the two drove home to get into the boy's brother's car and he drove both of them to St. Francis Hospital.
The teen's condition is currently unknown.
Gray faces one count of aggravated assault/domestic violence.

As of late Friday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
“The male victim had apparently driven himself to a retail location on FM 2410 after being wounded at some other location,” Police Chief Mike Gentry said in an email to the Herald. He said the victim was conscious when police found him. “The incident is under investigation, and the victim has not shared details with law enforcement at this point,” Gentry said at about 3:45 p.m. Friday. “Little else is known, but there is no evidence that this was a random incident, and there is no concern for the safety of those nearby.”
Police did reroute traffic in the area to search for possible evidence in the case. Anyone who has additional information about the incident is asked to call the Harker Heights Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 254-953-5400.

Boy, 7, remains hospitalized after shooting by mother in Dundalk domestic dispute
Baltimore, Md (3-27-16) A 7-year-old boy remained hospitalized Sunday with injuries that weren't life-threatening after his mother fired a gun at her husband, striking both him and their son, according to police.
Police have arrested the 30-year-old Dundalk woman who had wanted to take the couple's boy for the evening on Saturday, Baltimore County Police Department spokeswoman Jen Peach said.
Police received a call about a shooting in the 7300 block of School Avenue at about 7:05 p.m. The mother shot as the father turned to take their son inside, police said.
"She decided she was going to leave with the child and he said, 'No, you're not leaving,'" Peach said. "She fired one shot that struck the father in the arm and then continued on and struck the little boy on the hips and hands. The father was sort of shielding the son."
The father, 31, has been released from the hospital. The boy, originally identified by police as a 10-year-old, remained hospitalized "to make sure he doesn't have additional damage," Peach said.
The Baltimore County Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. Charges were pending, and the couple was not identified.

Accidental Shooting Injures 11-Year-Old
MEMPHIS, TN (3-25-16) An 11-year-old girl remains in critical condition after what appears to be an accidental shooting.
It happened around noon at the Somerset Park Apartments on Lake Park Drive off Winchester in southeast Memphis.
Memphis police are still investigating, but an MPD spokesperson says a child was playing with a gun when it accidentally fired, hitting the victim.
"It's kinda crazy though, if it comes to a child playing with a gun. Where was the parent? Where was the gun at?" asked resident Cynthia Terry. All questions Memphis police are working to get answered.
Terry is shaken up over the news an 11-year-old girl was shot just two doors down from her apartment.
Terry says her son had been outside playing with a few kids, including the victim, earlier in the morning. "Was out earlier this morning playing with these same children that got shot this morning. It could've been my son. It's horrible," said Terry. Terry is not only shaken up over the shooting, she's mad and says there's no excuse for what happened. "If you’re supposed to have a gun in your house, it's not supposed to be nowhere where a child can find it, period," said Terry. "My son, he come out here every day and want to play. And I feel like if I'm going to keep him huddled in the house. Then it's not a place for us to be." She wants to know how kids had access to a gun and who was supposed to be watching them.

Witness to Cleveland killing now says gunfire was accidental
CLEVELAND, Ohio (3-24-16) One of the men who told investigators that he found his now-dead friend lying in a front yard with gunshot wounds Monday night now says he witnessed the gunfire.
Quinton Norman told cleveland.com in a phone interview late Wednesday that he, Antony Henderson and another man were smoking Black and Milds in Henderson's SUV on East 80th Street near Cedar Avenue when the third man fired his pistol. The shooting appeared accidental, Norman said.
In the hours after the shooting, Norman and the other man told police that they found Henderson lying in a front yard with several gunshot wounds, and drove him to the Cleveland Clinic's emergency room.
But Norman said he went to police the next afternoon and told them a different story. "It was eating my conscious up bad," he said.
Henderson was pronounced dead at the hospital just after midnight Tuesday morning. While he suffered many gunshot wounds, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has yet to rule on Henderson's official cause of death. Cleveland police homicide detectives are still investigating the death, and declined to say Thursday whether Norman came forward or if his new story checks out.
Norman said he was on his way to meet up with this girlfriend Monday night when he stopped by East 80th Street to hang out with Henderson, whom he had known since Henderson was 10 years old. "Anthony was like my little brother," Norman said. "His mama is like a mama to me."
Norman, Henderson and a third man got into Henderson's 2002 Ford Explorer and started smoking, Norman said. Cleveland.com is not naming the third man because he did not return requests for comment, and has not been charged in connection with the incident.
Norman said that he got light-headed and decided to lie down in the backseat. Henderson sat in the driver's seat with his head in his hands, and the third man sat in the front passenger seat and played with a gun. Norman, with his eyes fixed on the SUV's ceiling, told the third man to put the gun away, he said. "As I said that, the next thing I know I see a big, white flash," Norman said. "I sit up, and look at (him), and he's looking at me with the gun in his hands and Anthony's sliding down the front seat.
"I didn't know what to do," Norman said. Norman said he and the third man drove Henderson the few blocks to the Cleveland Clinic in the Explorer. The shooter, who is on probation for weapons violations and currently facing forgery charges, suggested that he and Norman concoct a cover story on the way to the hospital, Norman said. "I didn't know what he would do," Norman said. "Now he's got a body on him, and I thought he's capable of doing anything. I thought he might kill me if I try to say something."
Norman and the man told investigators at the hospital that they found Henderson about 11:50 p.m. lying in the front yard of a home on East 80th Street. Henderson was already shot, they said. They scooped him up and drove him to the hospital in Henderson's SUV, they said.
Police towed Henderson's SUV from the hospital to search for evidence, according to a police report. Norman said he allowed investigators to swab his cheek for DNA and check his hands for gunshot residue when he went to give a new statement Tuesday. "I haven't been to sleep since it happened," Norman said.

Man sought after bizarre Fairfax Co situation (two in one shot)
SPRINGFIELD, Va. (3-24-16) Police attempting to serve a warrant ended up finding two shooting victims, Fairfax police said.
The bizarre situation unfolded late Wednesday night as Fairfax County police went to serve a warrant to Rashad James residence in Springfield.
Officers were responding to a home located in the 7500 block of Tralee Woods Court, where James was wanted for reckless discharge of a firearm.
However before officers turned onto the street they saw two vehicles leaving the townhouse. One of the cars hit a police cruiser on Creedmore Drive.
Police arrested that driver. In the second car, police found two men wounded, one shot in the hand the other the leg.
According to police, one of the men took his gun out to show it off and it accidentally discharged. The shot hit one man in the hand, went through his hand and hit another man in the leg. Neither of the men had life-threatening injuries.
Police determined that the shooting was accidental. Neighbors were not surprised after what he hears in his neighborhood. "A couple times a week,” Greg Lawrence said. “And it's not a firecracker you can tell the difference a single shot sometimes more I heard one Tuesday. Sounds like firing just to fire. I don't know what they're firing at, the air I guess." Other neighbors fear the trouble doesn't stop with random gunfire. "My concern is the drug trafficking is really out of control, it's bad. It's not all the black youth, there are white kids, mixed children all of them coming in bringing the drugs. Parents need to be informed," Geraldine Reed said.
Fairfax County police said after a search of the home they did not locate James and are still on the lookout for him. He is described as a black male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and around 165 pounds. Police said he likes to frequent the areas of Springfield and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Devon Lavan McDougald, 25, of 520 Elliott Drive, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and reckless conduct.
McDougald was sitting in the back of a car in a driveway on Elliott Drive on Wednesday afternoon. He told police the gun accidentally fired and hit a woman who was sitting in the front seat of the car.
Beck said the .38 caliber bullet went straight through the woman and she seemed to be doing OK at the scene. She was taken to Floyd Medical Center where she was still being treated late Wednesday according to FMC spokesman Dan Bevels.
Beck said police will conduct a gunshot residue test on McDougald to confirm that he shot the gun.

Not arrested in 2014 shooting death, Hernando County man faces gun charge
RIDGE MANOR, FL (3-23-16) A man who accidentally shot and killed a pregnant woman in 2014 while twirling a revolver was arrested Saturday after authorities say he repeatedly fired a gun in a reckless manner.
William Matthew DeHayes of Ridge Manor, who turned 37 on March 17, drunkenly fired a shotgun into the air several times while standing on his front lawn on the night of his birthday, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. He was charged with discharging a firearm in public, a misdemeanor.
In July 2014, DeHayes, who was living in Brooksville at the time, accidentally shot a friend's wife in the head while showing them a "Western-style" trick, twirling a loaded gun around his finger. He told police that he didn't think the gun was loaded.
Katherine Hoover, 25, of Inverness was rushed to the hospital, where she died early the next morning. She was five months pregnant with a child the couple planned to name Rehlin, who was surgically removed from his dying mother in an attempt to save his life but lived about 30 minutes.
Authorities ruled the shooting an accident and decided not to charge DeHayes with a crime.
This time around nobody was hurt.
On Thursday night, several neighbors called 911 after seeing or hearing DeHayes fire shots in front of his single-wide mobile home at 4335 Cimarron Way, about 20 yards from his neighbor's house, according to a Sheriff's Office incident report.
When deputies arrived around 9:45 p.m., they found DeHayes drinking a bottle of beer and showing signs of intoxication.
"I asked William how much he had to drink today and he stated he could not keep count," a responding deputy wrote in an incident report. "He stated he had been drinking alcohol since 12 noon and had been drinking beer and Crown Royal straight from the bottle."
DeHayes told deputies he was going to teach his girlfriend's 16-year-old daughter how to shoot.
"William bragged that he knew how to handle firearms and had been shooting guns all his life," the deputy noted in the report.
It was a line Donna Bryan, Hoover's mother, heard back in 2014.
"I don't think he has any training with guns, to be honest with you," she said. "And then to think he's going to teach a 16-year-old kid how to shoot a gun, when you live in a trailer park and everybody's houses are right on top of each other."
DeHayes acknowledged that the projectiles would fall straight down after he fired into the air, "but showed no signs of concern for his neighbors or anyone else in the area," the report said.
Deputies found the gun — a pistol-grip, 12-gauge shotgun, according to the report — inside the mobile home.
Deputies sought an arrest warrant before taking DeHayes into custody. He was arrested Saturday and taken to the Hernando County jail, where he was released on $1,000 bail several hours later. Attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.
Bryan, who has been active in trying to get DeHayes prosecuted for her daughter and grandson's deaths, said when she heard about last week's incident she felt "upset, angry, furious, rage."
"He killed my daughter and my grandson," she said Wednesday. "They gave him back his guns, and he's out shooting up the town again. And I'm petrified he's going to kill someone else."

Soldiers, friends: One shot, one charged with murder
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (3-21-16) The alleged shooting death of one paratrooper by another Saturday night stunned neighbors who said the two men were close.
Ryan Daniel Walker, 24, and Myles David Penix, 27, were members of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Bragg and were friends in the unit and on social media.
Both were at a party at Penix's house and the one next door Saturday in the Lands End complex off Morganton Road.
On Monday, Walker faced a Cumberland County judge, charged with the murder of his friend.
Just before midnight on Saturday, police were called to the scene of what was described as an accidental shooting.
"When officers arrived on scene, the victim was discovered on the floor of the living room with a single gunshot wound to the chest," police investigator Laura Downing told the court.
The investigation quickly identified Walker as the suspected shooter.
"There was some alcohol involved during these parties that may have played a factor into this," Downing said. "We're still looking into that."
Neighbor Tammi Scarborough said Penix had a wife and young child. "We always speak," she said. "I've seen him and his wife and the baby."
Penix was originally from California and had served in the Navy before joining the Army, according to a statement released after his death.

Cops: 15-year-old Apopka girl killed while teens played with gun
Apopka, Fl (3-21-16) Several teens were messing around with a gun Saturday at an Apopka home when it fired, striking and killing 15-year-old Destiny Bargman.
Destiny, who was rushed to a local hospital, later died from her injuries and police said a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge.
The teen is not being identified by the Orlando Sentinel because of his age.
Police have released few details about what led up to the shooting but said Destiny and the 16-year-old were with a group of teens at a home on the 1000 block of Sheeler Hills Drive.
Someone brought a gun to the house and the boy, along with several others, were shooting it in the backyard, according to the Joint Homicide Investigation Team, a regional agency based out of the Orlando Police Department.
Officers said several people called Apopka police about 12:45 p.m. to report a shooting.
At some point, the group moved inside and continued to "play" with the gun in a bedroom, police said.
"While that was going on, Destiny was shot," Orlando police spokeswoman Michelle Guido said.
Emergency crews responded after someone in the house called 911.
Orange County school district officials said Destiny attended Wekiva High School in Apopka.
"Our hearts go out to the family at this difficult time," a schools spokeswoman said.
Orlando police Sgt. Ian Berkman said detectives aren't searching for any additional suspects.
Destiny is the second 15-year-old shot and killed in Orange County in a week.
On March 12, Antwan Davis of Ocoee was found on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head. The Orange County Sheriff's Office on Friday arrested a 17-year-old on a second-degree murder charge stemming from his death.
Destiny is the seventh Central Florida teenager killed in a shooting since Jan. 1.

Gun Accidentally Shot into the Room of a Baby in Murfreesboro
Murfreesboro Police were summoned to the home in the 1500 block of Cason Trail on Sunday after a woman found the bullet hole while gathering dirty laundry from the hamper in the room of her newborn. A second bullet hole was found on the outside of the neighbor's home as well.
When officers spoke to the neighbor, he told police that he accidentally discharged his friends Hi Point 995 Rifle. He told the authorities that he thought the bullet only went through the wall of his home and not his neighbors. Luckily, no one was injured.

Murfreesboro Police were summoned to the home in the 1500 block of Cason Trail on Sunday after a woman found the bullet hole while gathering dirty laundry from the hamper in the room of her newborn. A second bullet hole was found on the outside of the neighbor's home as well.
